FANAA
Yash Raj Music, Rs.58
Much as the film is awaited, for being Kajol's comeback vehicle, for being paired with Aamir for the first time on-screen, for being seen as a possible hit to wipe off the long drought at the box office, the soundtrack of Fanaa has not managed to create much of a splash. But sometimes, that becomes immaterial to a listener. All the tracks of the film are indeed music to one's ears. Worth playing on a nice, breezy morning to feel good and to keep a party night young. Music directors Jatin and Lalit have made good use of the soothing santoor as the story is based in Kashmir. While Chanda Chamke and Des Rangila are playful numbers, Dekho Na and Mere Hath Mein can slow down your steps to meet the beat. Worth it if you are looking at something different this season.
RAB TOH MANGIA KARO
Nupur
So we have yet another singer belting out some nice Punjabi numbers. Gulzar, touted as the `new kid on the block' does a fair job of singing that could please the listeners who generally follow the likes of Daler Mehndi, Mika and others of their ilk. Gulzar, not to be confused with the well-known lyricist, has a robust voice that is the hallmark of those into singing Punjabi songs. The CD has 10 tracks. The pick of the lot is the title song Rab Toh Mangia Karo, Khishiyan de din chaar. (Na hi mangna paisa, mangna kushiyan ta pyala, khushiyan de din chaar, rab toh mangia karo...) Aaja Ni Tu Aaja is another jolly good number. Gulzar's voice is quite melodious in this duet. The good thing about this CD is that unlike most Punjabi albums, none of the songs are too noisy or boisterous. The tune of Munde Nachde Punjabi appears to have been borrowed from some Hindi film song but that is a forgivable offence. Any day better than the crude remix offerings.
GOLDEN SUPER OLDIES
EMI, Rs.150
Mellow voices and lilting notes from yesteryear is what this twin disc compilation promises. Forgotten songs like Rose Garden and waltzy Thats Amore come back to back with a mush-high Paul Anka anthem Love is A Lonely Song. Before you start to drool on that single malt voice there is Lobo and also The Everly Brothers. For the generationext, there is Cher from her Bang Bang years as also Beach Boys with the original version of California Dreamin' that is in fact a cooler version of what is belted in pubs today. With a line up that includes Cliff Richards, Shirley Bassey, Manfred Mann and more, this is one collection you would like to buy for a quiet night by the fire. Go for it.
