A bagful of medals

The OU tennis team bags laurels and goodies

Sportspersons from Osmania University bagged quite a few medals in the All-India inter university meets in various disciplines. They were honoured during a function organised at the University recently. The Osmania University also took the laudable step to motivate its sportspersons to strive for further glory by announcing cash awards of Rs. 4,000 for those who won gold medals, Rs. 2,500 for silver medal winners and Rs. 1,500 for bronze medal winners.

Some of the All-India titles were won by the men's and women's tennis teams, the men's kayaking team, the women's cricket team and bodybuilder M. Hanumanth Reddy. There were also international medal winners such as Mrudula, Poonam Reddy, Ishwarya, Parameshwari and Rishipal Singh. The managers and coaches of the winners were also honoured.

"We have a good number of talented men and women players studying in the Osmania University and its affiliated colleges and we are trying to encourage them by providing all the help they need in order to help them to succeed at the highest levels," says K. Surender Reddy, secretary, Inter University Tournaments, of Osmania University.

He feels that if more attention is paid to raising the standards of sports in our universities and colleges, and towards establishing transparent norms in selection and conduct of the sports meets, there will be an automatic improvement in the standards throughout the country. This in turn will result in India bagging more medals and honours in international meets.
