Beautiful blanket

Gaillardia, with its charming hues, can liven up the dullest of gardens

Gardener's pride Gaillardia

One of the most cheerful blossoming plants, gaillardia, is also called blanket flower.

An annual that is easily grown from seed, this plant is perfect for long, low borders or small pots. Self-seeding, after a plant's flowering season, is a boon to gardeners.

Little florets form a circlet in a daisy-like flower, with a central seed head. Colours range from reds, oranges and yellows to a combination of these three basic shades.

The result is a touch of warmth to a dull garden. Single and double blooms can last a few days on the plant and are increasingly being sold as long strings of tied flowers, for decoration purposes.

The flowers exude a mild fragrance.

Germination in hot weather is generally very fast, and seedlings can be transplanted within three weeks. Plenty of water is needed during growth and flowering stages, as well as a sunny position.

Artificial feeding could help bring about brighter and slightly larger blooms, though care must be taken not to overfeed. The plant will easily succumb to overfeeding and die a rapid death.
