Catwalking to her own tunes

India's first woman Disc Jockey, Megha Kawale, wears many hats

IN RHYTHM Megha Kawale, model and DJ

She is an interesting professional mix. The first woman DJ of the country, this is also a ramp model and was declared Femina Face of the year because of her achievement in these dual fields of activity.

"I have been Djing for the past eight years and never dreamt of this kind of recognition that I would get." It's a well-deserved one though. Dabbling in varied fields is hectic and stressful. "You have to understand music well to be able to spin those tracks which would get all on the dance floor wild. Consistency in your work will get you more but it's the kind of atmosphere you are in. Late nights, clubs, drinks and all make it very scary for parents to allow their kids (to go to such places). I too had to face stiff opposition but now things have settled down amicably." She has plans getting into the production side of music and cutting her own album. But for now this "kindred spirited Virgo" has got both her hands full, one settling drapes and cuts down her lissom figure, and the other mixing music to new beats. Though she does feel that modelling keeps her in touch with life around, else her reclusive nature would shut her out completely in a male dominated field like Djing.

Ask her on the latest `wardrobe malfunctions' that have plagued the fashion ramps. "It's been happening for years. It was this time that it got live video footage and was blown out of proportion. And even an enquiry commission instituted. That's too ridiculous. And models generally know how to handle it gracefully."
