New Delhi saw a wellness show this past week
|
If there is an area where ancient techniques and wisdom have collaborated with modern technology to spawn a pan-global industry, then it is surely the spa and wellness sector. To promote it in India, Exposure Media Marketing and Services International organised a two-pronged international exhibition, asiaSpa and Wellness Asia, 2006, at the Taj Palace hotel in New Delhi this past week.
Elaborating on it, Parineeta Sethi, Chief Editor of Asia Spa India magazine, an unit of EMMSI, said, "With this three-day event, we want to showcase the spa, health and wellness industry under one roof, set up an interface between consumers and exhibitors through live demonstrations, etc." A claim that was seen to be ratified as several Indian and international brands had put up counters. While the wellness show focussed on alternative medicinal therapies, leading personal care products and mainstream fitness industries, asiaSpa had players like Chivasom, Remy Laure, VLCC, Shahnaz Hussain among others.
As stress levels can shoot up alarmingly in today's busy life, people who can afford it look out for a vent that is holistic, to rejuvenate the body and mind. And catering to these needs has made the spa industry worldwide worth Rs.10.7 billion with an annual growth of 200 per cent in the Asia Pacific region. The industry has thus grown from a cottage industry into a conglomeration of diverse sectors, including hospitality, tourism and airlines.
At the show, the surreal ambience - with aroma from herbs and floating candles wafting in the air - provided a glimpse of the old converging with the new, with herbal, ayurveda and other therapeutic products vying for attention with the latest hi-tech gizmos. Also, the Embassy of Israel's counter, with Dead Sea beauty products ("Dead Sea contains 21 minerals, 12 of which are rare."), the anti-aging treatment of Malaysia's DRx clinic (where vital cells from the patient's blood are extracted and then injected into the anaesthetised areas marked for treatment) were altogether different ball games. Parineeta added, "Going by the response, we propose to make it an annual event."
