Urban choices

hivari Manishi' mirrors the changes in the lives of a couple when they move to the city

What happens to the millions of couples who come to the cities from villages? See Chivari Manishi by D. Srinivas and you would get an inkling of the urban cultural shock.

The docu-drama had its premiere at the L.V. Prasad Labs recently and showed the travails of Lakshmi and Srinivas as they land up in a shanty town in Hyderabad.

The happy innocent couple who know no sorrow start drifting once Lakshmi gets under the influence of a neighbour called Padma and a stranger called Mr Television.

Both show her the world of possibilities and what she is missing in life.

The second half of the 30-minute shows the hellish choices the couple faces as the blandishments of urbanity like a flat, cellphone and other gizmos beckon Lakshmi and Shankar, a factory worker cannot provide.

Is there a choice?
