Making the right choice

Parents and teachers should guide their wards into the right path, says Prasant Kumar Das

Guiding the young generation into making the right career choice is a challenging task.

Last year we had the opportunity of inviting the All India Topper in Civil Services Examination to our institution. On interacting with him we learnt that he achieved this feat only after tasting failure a couple of times. He had chosen to study subjects that had nothing to do with his engineering degree from BITS, Pilani.

I have come across several people who have had a similar experience to that of this IAS friend. Many continue to lead a dissatisfied life as their hearts and souls lie in something else. They really do not enjoy their work. There are people like these in all walks of life.

Often our parents, neighbours and the society are responsible for us making the wrong choice. By the time the children are ready to leave school, parents and teachers should know where the child's genuine and deep-rooted interests lie. It is the collective effort and responsibility of parents and teachers to identify the swadharma of the children. They should accordingly guide them towards a flourishing career.
