Dancers will discuss the Challenges of Change in the Indian Dancescape
Geeta Chandran
Since 1982, April 29 has been celebrated as World Dance Day. This decision was taken by the International Dance Council, a non-profit non-governmental organisation based within the UNESCO headquarters. The Council is the official umbrella organisation for all dance forms across the countries of the world. It reflects the principles of the UN and UNESCO in its commitment to non-discrimination regarding approaches to dance, or race, gender, religion, political affiliation, or social status.
In India, the occasion has picked up attention over the past few years. This Saturday, Delhi sees apart from the usual programmes of dance and music that dot the calendar, a seminar exclusively dedicated to the occasion. `Challenges of Change in the Indian Dancescape', organised by Geeta Chandran's Natya Vriksha, in cooperation with UNESCO and the India International Centre at the latter's auditorium, starts at 10 a.m. with talks on the significance of this day, problems faced by young dancers, the changing contours of presentation and other topics. Entry is free. Eminent as well as lesser-known artistes and connoisseurs will be present.
