Chords & Notes

GANGSTER

Sa Re Ga Ma, Rs. 145

Like most music tracks from the Mahesh Bhatt camp, this bunch of eight is also a good mix of slow and soft, loud and racy numbers.

The ones that stand out are "Tu Hi Meri Shab Hai", "Lamha Lamha", "Mujhe Mat Roko" and "Ya Ali". KK has done a good job of crooning "Tu Hi_" by bringing in so breezily the emotions of a man in love. Abhijeet and Sunidhi Chauhan too deserve credit for "Lamhe_" for being able to make listeners almost xperience the clinking of two hearts. "Ya Ali" by Zubeen can be good company on a bike ride and "Mujhe Mat Roko" by Kavita Seth has the power to slow down your steps.

The biggest dampener of the album though is "Bheegi Bheegi" by the Bangalsehi singer, James. The song has an unusual tune but the singer lets down listeners at many places by breaking the tempo.

SWARANJALI

AAVL, Rs.40

Unfailingly, week after every week, a devotional cassette or a CD hits the market. And most of them usually belong to the so-so category, with songs thriving on catchy filmy tunes, with an occasional good or original rendering thrown in for good measure. But this latest one from Aarohi Audio Visuals is pure joy. Each and every bhajan has been wonderfully sung by Sushmita Mazumdar, who is endowed with a soft and beautiful voice. Her voice seems hauntingly familiar. Have we heard her before, can't really say. There is a lazy elegance, an old world charm, to her voice, and the unhurried pace of her singing further heightens the beauty of her voice. The soft music, what with liberal use of flute, further enhances the quality of this offering.

There are eight bhajans, four on each side and each one seems better than the other. Side A begins with "Hey Dayamayi Sharde Ma" and at once you are captivated by her voice. The second one - slightly fast-paced, but only so very slightly - is a real treat. "Mohe Braj Bisrat Naahi" is another fine rendering.

In Side B "Karuna Nidhaan Tum Ho" and "Bajo Re Man" are delightful. Curiously the cassette does not have the name of the music director but full marks to Sushmita Mazumdar. Listening to this cassette is joy, sheer joy.

MADAGASCAR

Sa R e Ga Ma, Rs.299

Last August when it was released alongside the much talked about Mangal Pandey, not too many people gave it even an outside chance at the box office. But again, it proved to be the proverbial hare and tortoise story with Ketan Mehta's film biting the dust and the little animation delight scoring with people across different groups. Now, the film comes in a CD format that should greatly thrill kids what with the summer vacation almost here. And if Madagascar is here, can the cries of "Move it, move it" be far behind?

So kids prepare to undertake a trip to New York's Central Park Zoo whose animals find themselves shipwrecked on the island of Madagascar. What happens later is a little secret that those who have not seen the film at the cinema hall can discover watching this two VCD pack at home. And if you have already seen it, well, having a second look at this film from the makers of Shrek and Shark Tale won't hurt!
