The `casino' city turns 100

Las Vegas is celebrating its centennial this year with a lot of fanfare

MORE THAN JUST SLOT MACHINES Las Vegas by night

When we think of Las Vegas, the image that instantly comes to mind is a city with slot machines and seductive women, typical Hollywood style.

True, all these are there. But there's more to the city, which is celebrating its centennial this year amidst a lot of fanfare.

Las Vegas is Nevada's nice little city, and a perfect getaway for your family. From the time you arrive at the McCarran International Airport, it captures your attention. If you happen to arrive by an evening flight, make sure you get a window seat as it allows you a spectacular aerial view of the city, complete with its hills and famous landmarks.

With a population of two million, Las Vegas is sight to behold by night. Just as you drive out of the airport, you enter the famous Strip, the three-mile long boulevard that stretches from north to south, through the city. The lifeline of Vegas, it is on this stretch that you'll find some of the world's biggest hotels and casinos.

A sight to behold

A dizzying kaleidoscope of colour, the sidewalks spill with an endless stream of tourists who make it a point to visit the famed casinos.

First inhabited by a small community of Mormon missionaries in the mid-1800s, Las Vegas (meaning `meadows' in Spanish) bloomed into world famous whirligig of chance with the arrival of the railroad in 1905.

Today, it is a bustling and booming metropolis, attracting over 30 million tourists annually.

If you are heading for downtown Vegas, make sure to go to Fremont Street to witness the most thrilling light and sound show featuring a domed mesh canopy of some 2.5 million lights located 100 feet above. The show is played every hour between 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Fremont Street, the Glitter Gulch as it is known, is home to some of the oldest casinos in Las Vegas. The casinos have the same bonging slot-machines and roulettes. Day or night, these places are crowded with game-zealots.

Las Vegas is the fastest growing metro in the U.S. Every time you visit the city, there's something new that you'll find here. The best way to discover the city is by walking in a leisurely manner, and that's what most tourists do.

The constant flow of people, the neon lights, the music... they are part of Vegas' fantasy, and will recharge your spirits every moment.
