A peek at Poland

Of Polish films from May 4-7

FASCINATING SAGA A scene from "The Magnate"

To mark Poland's National Day, the Indo Cine Appreciation Foundation is organising a Polish Film Festival, in association with the Embassy of the Republic of Poland, New Delhi, and the Indo Polish Chamber of Commerce & Industries in Tamil Nadu, at the South Indian Film Chamber Theatre, 606, Anna Salai.

The festival will be inaugurated by John Prabakar, president, Indo Polish Chamber of Commerce & Industries in Tamil Nadu, at 6.15 p.m. on May 4, and the first film that will be screened is "The Orchestra Conductor,, directed by Andrzej Wajda. The story is about a violinist in a provincial Polish orchestra, whose husband is the director of the ensemble, which is on a visit to the U.S. and ties up with a world-renowned symphony conductor. As it turns out, he was once in love with the violinist's mother. The conductor, a slightly unstable hypochondriac, returns to Poland to lead the provincial orchestra. He tries to revive the old love affair... what follows is an interesting tale. On May 6, 6.15 p.m., "Squint Your Eyes" directed by Andrzej Jakimowski, will be screened. The story is about a spirited 10-year-old girl who has run away from her proudly affluent parents. It will be followed at 8 p.m. by "Weiser", directed by Wojciech Marczewski. "Weiser" is based on a novel by Pawel Huelle. Pawel, the protagonist, returns after 30 years, to the events of childhood, when he was influenced by his friend David Weiser, who has supernatural abilities. An intense story of a quest that becomes an obsession. "The Magnate", directed by Filip Bajon, will be screened at 3.30 p.m. on May 7. The film traces the fascinating saga of a Polish princely dynasty between 1900 and 1935. In 1900, Prince Hans von Teuss entertains Emperor Wilhelm II with a bison hunt at his palace.

He finds out years later that his wife was the emperor's lover and divorces her. In the 1920s, during the Silesian uprisings, the Prince's son Konrad befriends his foreman's son. In 1932, the Prince, now married to young Marisca, becomes paralysed and is confined to a wheelchair. His diabolical elder son takes over the ruined estate and unknown to his father becomes associated with Hitler's supporters.
