HR trainer Jim Claitor shares views on `employee retention'
|
HR CONCERNS It's important to analyse why employees leave, feels Jim Claitor
Many a trouble bogs the employee of today. It could be the perils of dissatisfaction, the danger of monotony, the insatiable urge for more compensation or the more profound problem of stagnation. When overcome by these corporate demons, many of the employees simply quit, making retention a major issue for all HR departments. To help HR personal deal with retention policy, training firm Middle Earth organised a training seminar in collaboration with Carlton Advanced Management Institute, USA. Speaking at the seminar were leading HR trainers, Jim Claitor from the United States and Nitin Sankar.
`Not to loose the best and the brightest', was the focal point of the seminar. For as pointed out by Claitor, it is the people with the best acumen and outstanding ability for consistent performance that are highly mobile. Because, a bright mind can move to another firm whenever he wills. Thus making it imperative that a conscious effort be made to retain the best and the brightest.
It might be the corporate world but that doesn't mean it has to be cold as a steel tower. People at work yearn for a sense of belonging and covet respect. `People Count' says Jim Claitor and adds that it is vital that one values one's employee.
Retention is a manifold task. Over a period of two days, Jim Claitor and Nitin Sankar, elucidated the various facets that go into making an employee stay. It starts with the process of hiring, `don't hire to fire' quips Jim Claitor. He explained that often recruiters grab and hire people just to fill a hole. More often than not, this results in disaster. "One has to hire some one, you are excited about," he says. In the interview, the recruiter has to assess if the candidate will fit into the culture of the firm, if his skills and expectations match the needs and work of the company.
"Can I get another boss!?" is often the cry that results from an employee that is gripped by dismay, feels Claitor. He adds that people stick on to the job when they have a good boss because they know how easy it is to find a bad one!!
With the importance of retention comes to fore a need for change in perception. Says Nitin Sankar,
Ultimately, it's important to analyse why people leave for it's a great cost to loose a valuable employee. Motivating to create ardour, energising to instil dynamism, rewarding to assuage discontent and ensuring means for personal growth and development are retention policies that are bound to succeed. With these both the company and employee are bound to scale great heights of success and satisfaction, together as an inseparable team!!
