Our responsibilities towards senior citizens
Golden grey years
Voluntary organisations should set up helplines and arrange for volunteers to visit senior citizens, both to give company and be of assistance. The facility of house visits by doctors should be made available by government and medical associations. Crimes against senior citizens should be dealt with severely and invite higher penalty. Legal protection against coercion by relatives to part with property must be given. There is need to remove physical barriers to mobility and provide easy accessibility to parks and buildings. Implementation of the "no waiting" facility in hospitals and public offices would be a boon to the seniors. Schools, colleges and public buildings should offer their space for senior citizens' organisations on a nominal rent for their activities and functions. Day care centres for senior citizens would be welcome. Standards for care and maintenance of old age homes must be laid down and panels of visitors should be nominated to keep a check.
