For the road..

Want a car that's doubles up as your best travel buddy?

Which car should you choose for the highways, which car doubles up as a good city run but has enough punch, space and practicality for your family on the highway? We find out.

TATA INDICA TURBO

Note the emphasis here is on the word turbo. More importantly it comes at the price of a Santro, with more room than any of the sub-Rs 5-lakh cars, the Indica Turbo diesel becomes the logical choice of a budget travel car.

ACCENT VIVA CRDi

The motor is punchy and makes an abundance of torque, which incidentally is enough to shame its petrol-engine sibling when it comes to passing power. The refinement of the 3-cylinder engine could be better and rear leg space greater, but then there is that list of mile-long positives.

TOYOTA INNOVA

It's well built, can easily accommodate seven passengers in comfort and because of its square loading bay, carrying large, odd-shaped equipment is a breeze too. It is solid at high speeds and doesn't possess instability issues that plague a number of other SUVs. The 2.5 CRDi engine however, needs more passing power.

OCTAVIA COMBI RS

With a 150bhp engine under its hood, few other cars have the same mile-eating appetite the Combi RS demonstrates. This car has amazing luggage gulping ability and can accommodate almost an entire elephant in its lengthy loading bay and is powered by an engine that has the urge of a rocket motor. The solid suspension handles all kinds of roads with confidence, and it's so fatigue-free behind the wheel.

MITSUBISHI PAJERO

Though SUVs are not as comfortable at highway speeds as low-slung cars, if you need to reach up that Himalayan mountain path, drive into the desert or even cross a dry riverbed, then this car will do it without groaning even once.
