Caste crisis
As arguments and counter-arguments rage over the proposed 27 per cent reservation for OBCs in Central educational institutions, a film screening and a discussion has been organised on the topic this weekend.
Peoples Union For Civil Liberties, Peoples Democratic Forum and Pedestrian Pictures are presenting two films Untouchable Country by R.R. Srinivasan and Resilient Rhythms by Gopal Menon followed by a discussion on Reservations: Typecasting Dalit Rights?
Untouchable Country speaks of how the concept of untouchability emerged as a concept and how scriptures have been used to perpetrate inhuman practices against Dalits.
Resilient Rhythms speaks of how the Indian caste system places nearly 160 million people at the periphery of society by assigning "polluting" tasks to them.
The discussion following the screening will be initiated by Indudhar Honnapura of Dalit Sangharasha Samithi and Shivsundar, a journalist with the weekly Lankesh.
The event, at Ashirvad, SBI Circle, St. Mark's Road, is open to all. The screening begins at 3 p.m. on May 7 (Sunday). For details call 94483-71389/ 99860-31428/ 98868-00642.
