TAKING THE RAMP One of the students flaunting an outfit

Be it Paris, New York or London, the Indian fashion industry is making its mark all over the world. So naturally, there are a whole lot of youngsters now willing to share a piece of the pie. Their obvious route is to take up training in fashion designing. Institutions like National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), with a limited number of seats, obviously can't accommodate all. So where does the rest go? Herein enters institutes like Khazani Women's Polytechnic offering a platform to the willing ones to try out their style ideas and enterprise. Established in 2002, the institute, which has reportedly given training to 5000 girls so far, has its colleges across the National Capital Region such as Gurgaon, Pitampura, Khanpur, Faridabad and Narela etc.

Fashion ideas

The polytechnic celebrated its third annual festival called Fashion Fiesta 2006 at the Talkatora Indoor Stadium this past week. All the 25 branches of Khazani participated in the event. This year, the institutes students blended 15 fashion ideas with five folk dances from different parts of India to showcase their creations. The students themselves took the ramp on themes like `forest' (aimed at spreading awareness on environment), `black' representing different shades of the colour, black, Indo-western fusion, bridal wear from various states, bohemian look etc. The institute alumni also entertained the audience with Bollywood dance numbers and a quwwali.

Fashion designers, Jazzy Joe and Sharon Mehra judged the participants' works.
