Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary
Located at Unnao District, on the Lucknow-Kanpur National Highway, Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary is home to several migratory and water birds. An ideal site for bird watching and photography, this sanctuary has a huge marshland and a shallow lake bordered with mixed dry forest. It is spread in an area of 3 sq km and attracts hundreds of migratory birds during winter. The lake forms a perfect place for the migratory and water birds for a long stay. In order to promote proper protection and conservation to the resident and migratory birds, the Nawabganj lake and its surrounding areas were declared the Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary in 1984. Approximately 250 species of resident and migratory birds are found here.
Best Season: The sanctuary can be visited all year round, but the best season to watch the migratory birds is November to March.
Resident and migratory birds: Sarus crane, painted stork, white ibis, black ibis, dabchick, whistling teal, open billed stork, white necked stork, black necked stork, spoon bill, pheasant tailed jacana, bronze winged jacana, purple moorhen, white breasted water hen, Indian moorhen, grebe, cormorant darter, lapwing, egret, vulture, kite, koel, dove, pigeon, king crow, golden oriole, babbler, bee eater, parakeet, finch, peacock and comb duck.
Fish: Katla, mangur, saul, sindhi and kavai.
Reptiles: Cobra, viper, krait, rat snake, water snake.
Deer Park: A deer park is also situated in the bird sanctuary area. It has spotted deer and barking deer.
Bird Interpretation Centre: To teach visitors about birds an interpretation centre is established in the sanctuary. It has the provision to show films related to wildlife.
Walking trails: Two walking trails, eastern and western, have been constructed to facilitate bird watching.
How to get there:
The Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary is 45 km from Kanpur railway station. The Amuasi Airport, Lucknow is 35 km and the Lucknow railway station is 55 km away. Taxis and buses are also available.
Accommodation: It is better to get prior reservation in the state-owned motel in the sanctuary. Other lodges are also available close by.
