Malabar magic

Kerala Spice offers beyond authentic cuisine at a super affordable rate in a cheerfully spacious ambience

That we are city with a jolly floating population needs no reiteration. Everyone who comes to our fair city grows roots and stays put. Even though the roots go pretty deep, there are times when one would like a taste of home. Since we firmly believe in athithi devo bhava there are places that serve authentic Andhra food that also satisfies the craving for Andhra Chinese (ahem), Punjabi, Chettinad and Malayali.

Rocking options

One of these beyond authentic places is Kerala Spice on Airport Road. While the hoarding bravely insists that Chinese and tandoor is also served, one should be barking mad to try any of that when there are rocking options that are truly, madly, deeply Kerala.

Starting with breaker where you could choose to indulge in the light-as-snow puttu and kadala or the many kinds of appam, everything on the menu reminds one of God's own country.

The unlimited thali at Rs. 30 is value for money big time.

The thali has the divine, plump little Kerala papadam, the typical mango pickle, the dry vegetable or the upperi, the curd-based moru, sambar and payasam among other delicacies.

The rice served is the red boiled variety while water is jeeraka vellam — water boiled with cumin seeds.

Fluffy, layered Kerala parotas for Rs. 5 can be teamed with green peas masala for the veggies and chicken, mutton or egg curry for non-veggies.

The fish molly is creamy and delicately flavoured. While you could have your choice of fish — go with the seer fish, which is fresh and fleshy and supremely satisfying. Seer fish is good fried as well. There is crab and prawn for the dedicated seafood lovers.

The genial proprietor Cyril Matthew takes a personal interest in the proceedings and during rush hour (lunch time sees the place flooded with corporate types) steps in to take orders, make suggestions and even serve you. If that does not make you feel at home then probably nothing will!

Matthew started the restaurant about three years ago and since then there has been no looking back. The sense of space is very welcome with the 20 tables being spread on ample space ensuring that one can eat without stabbing your neighbour in the eye. There is a feeling of being in transit with the steel food trays with little compartments and the push button washbasin reminds one of travelling on a train — on a journey of well-cooked food and efficient, friendly service.

Kerala Spice is at 493/3, First Block, Brahma Lingeswara Complex, Kodihalli, Airport Road. Call 56694104 or 41265146.
