The music of sound

Elvis is not sounding as charming in your car as in your home. Why isn't sound what it should be - music? Provided you have all the requisite hardware music software in place , here are a few things you can do to get better.

Firstly, ensure that all your speakers are in phase. For that, unhook the speaker you want to test at the amp (both wires preferably). Using a 1.5-volt battery(any size), touch the positive terminal of the battery to the positive wire going to the speaker, and then do the same for the negative wire. Have a friend look at the speaker. If it pops out, the polarity is correct; but if the speaker pops in, it is hooked up backwards (out of phase). To fix this, simply reverse the wires when hooking the speaker back to the amplifier. A word of caution: DO NOT hold the battery to the speaker for more than a second - all you want to do is to see if it pops in or out. You will damage the speaker if you hold constant power to it. And do not use a higher voltage.

Next step: Set all the sources and processors to "flat" on your head unit. Set the bass, mid and treble controls to zero. Set all Equaliser (EQ) bands to 0dB.Set the gains on all the amps and processors to the middle. Balance and fader controls should also be in the middle. By now, your stereo should sound pretty good. If not, check your installation. EQs are not designed to compensate for installation flaws. Turn the gain control up until you get clipping - for instance, the bass, which is getting boosted nicely as you increase it, suddenly sounds flat. Go back one step until it sounds right and keep it there. Keepsetting controls until everything sounds about perfect, but be careful not to fry the voice coils on the speakers by overdoing the gain. And if you change a speaker, it is wise to readjust the system's gains.

Next up, smoothen frequency response. First tweak only using gains and crossover settings, and do not be tempted to adjust the equalisation yet. Since you already set your gains for maximum output, if you have to re-adjust, turn gains down on the speakers that are the loudest. Choose different types of music. Even if you don't like to listen to jazz or classical music, they are a great resource to set systems.
