Healing by the hills

Kalpaviruksha at Thekkupalayam provides holistic ayurvedic treatment

PICTURESQUE LOCALE Kalpaviruksha

A 15-km drive from Coimbatore will take you to Thekkupalayam, where lies one of the most rejuvenating health retreats on the foothills of the Western Ghats.

You will be forgiven for mistaking Kalpaviruksha to be a modern day spa or holiday resort, with its picturesque locale, profusion of greenery, tranquil surroundings and plentiful fresh air and sunshine.

Against the backdrop of the sweeping hills, Kalpaviruksha, literally meaning Holy Tree, is an Ayurvedic village that focusses on providing, wholesome, authentic Ayurvedic treatment.

Kalpaviruksha aims at healing body, mind and soul in true Ayurvedic style, while showing people that Ayurveda is more than just oil massages.

A treatment centre and hospital, Kalpaviruksha provides treatment for everything from hair loss to arthritis, through holistic practices and care.

Every detail has been looked into, from having herb-fed cows in the ghoshala to growing healing plants in the centre so that every aspect of the stay is based on this ancient science.

A picturesque courtyard and pathway will take you to the main office leading you to cottages that have been built across the sprawling compound.

Kalpaviruksha has its own beauty parlour, department store, pharmacy, yoga centre, meditation room, restaurant, herbal gardens and an Ayurvedic ghoshala.

The restaurant "Poorna" utilises traditional cooking methods to offer herbal food. The diet ensures that at least one variety of herb is part of the daily intake.

A unique feature of the centre is its cottages, which are made from the soil dug out of the land they stand on and are said to have healing properties.

For instance some of them have open-air bathrooms so that the patients can derive optimum sunshine that is vital for certain cures.

Herbal cottage

A herbal cottage is also available where the cots, the curtains and the walls all have healing qualities so that the patient gets constant treatment. Though Kalpaviruksha does have residential facilities, patients can also make day visits for their treatments, but Ayurveda curtails travelling during treatment.

As Ayurveda-based treatment depends on individual constitution, no general diagnosis can be made like in Western medicine.

Therefore, no packages are available for patients to choose from.

After a consultation, depending on individual needs and constitution, treatment is offered.

As Ayurveda does not provide quick fix treatments, there is a counselling centre that educates patients on Ayurveda.

Dr. B. A. Uma is the Chief Ayurvedic physician at Kalpaviruksha and she is supported by well-trained staff and personnel.
