Enchanted forest

An enchanted place in the woods is Kaalakkayam

NATURE'S ELIXIR Kaalakkayam falls

It sounded like a fairy tale told by grandma. An enchanted place in the woods and a waterfall that rejuvenates tired travellers.

Tempted by the description, I set out to locate this magical place. As I reached the place, I had to agree that it was worth the trip.

Placid pool

Situated in a tropical forest near Idinjaar, the crystal clear water rushes through rocks to form a cool placid pool called Kaalakkayam.

The water looks tempting and invites visitors to take a dip. Nothing better to beat the heat.

Part of the Mankayam stream that originates somewhere in the Agasthyavanam forest, the Kaalakkayam falls can be dangerous during the monsoon.

Tread cautiously when you cross this stream to visit this pristine place; the smooth rocks polished by moss and water are dangerously slippery.

Do not step into the water if the sky is cloudy as a rain even in the distant forest may cause a flash flood here.

Tree trunks fallen across the stream make perfect diving boards and granite stretches provide the space to stretch out and just be.

To follow the course of this stream is an experience to cherish. One can spot a wide variety of flora and fauna in the forest nearby.

Trek along the heights or just relax on the top of a rock and watch the rays of the sun filter through the green canopy. Listen to the roar of the waterfall and soak in the experience.

How to get there

Go to Palode, which is 35 km from Thiruvananthapuram. Take a deviation from Palode to Peringamala. From here, turn right and drive 12 km through Idinjaar to reach Kurissadi. From here take the second hairpin bend. Here sign boards can be seen exhorting travellers to `prevent forest fires.' Towards the right, there is a narrow path along which only one person can travel. This path takes you to the spot.
