New sights, more flights, Italy has added to its charm to woo the Indian traveller

NO, IT'S NOT PUNJAB One of the vistas captured during an international cycling event in Italy

Many might not know that the word, `tourism' was invented in Italy in the 16th Century. Since that day it is said that Italy became one of the most sought after tourist destinations. Be it the Italian art and sculpture or Italian food, all have been successful in attracting tourists from across the world.

With the introduction of more and more modern facilities and newer sites, the Italian tourism industry is looking at drawing in more visitors and infuse into them "a sense of belongingness with the Roman civilisation".

With all this in mind the Italian Embassy hosted a joint evening with Alitalia Airlines and Enit, the State tourism board of Italy to promote that country as an important tourist destination among Indians. Almost 20 tour operators from India were felicitated on the occasion for their contribution towards encouraging tourism in Italy.

Deputy Chief de Mission, Giorgio Starace said that Italy and India are very similar to each other culturally and the Indian tourists would relate to the culture of Italy. He hoped that with the opening of new Italian sites to tourists, the experience would be a great one.

More flights

The partners in this effort, Alitalia has decided to increase the number of flights flying from Delhi and Mumbai from six a week to seven a week.

Elaborating about it, General Manager, Alitalia, Fabio Bigotti said that there are packages on offer for people travelling to Italy. He informed Alitalia has got in touch with VFS (Visa Facilitation Services) to help the people in getting visa related information.

Italy offers options like camping, mountaineering, skydiving and rafting, etc for adventure sport enthusiasts. Also, there are many regions in Italy, which the outside world hasn't yet explored. In this regard the representative of Enit, Salvatore Ianniello, said that with the opening of new centres for tourists in Italy, more tourists have started visiting the country.

Ianniello talked about the fifth `Festa-Italiana' which is going to be celebrated across five Indian cities. The celebration, among other things, would highlight Italy as a tourist spot. He also talked about having a Tourism Italy Expo in Delhi and Mumbai.
