COLOUR AND DIVINITY On display

Each of the navadhanya has something good to offer at the ongoing exhibition at Poompuhar in Town Hall. If wheat can improve your eyesight, paddy hones your intellectual skills. Green gram can help you glow and dhal plays a role in helping you reach greater heights. For good health, education, wealth and good fortune, all you need is a navadhanya idol — so say the organisers.

You can choose a Lord Vinayaga, a Lord Krishna or a Lord Siva in any size. Prices range between Rs.25 and Rs.400. In every dhanya idol, the food grains are neatly arranged and glued together in striking combinations. They are also imaginatively laminated. Organised by Poompuhar, the exhibition brings together under one roof, handicrafts from various places in Tamil Nadu.

Also, hand embroidery and mirror work on cloth bags exhibited by SHGs from Andhra is a definite draw. Handbags, cell phone pouches and decorative wall hangings are available at this stall. Prices begin at Rs.110 for a cell phone pouch and wallets come at Rs.40. Long-strapped ethnic handbags cost Rs.80 and come in a variety of colours.

You can also buy Fengshui chimes that come with a wooden parrot in the middle (Rs.110).

Candle stands, agarbathi stands and lamps and paniyara kal carved of soft stones are also available. Soft-stone idols of gods ranging anything upward of Rs.25 are on display.

Chains, necklaces and rings made of semi-precious stones and the more expensive diamond, emerald, ruby, sapphire, topaz, aquamarine and amethyst find a place at the exhibition. Pretty carved boxes in wood, Chennapatna toys and stuffed leather toys and a plethora of lucky stones, rudraksha beads, spatika beads, acupuncture foot rollers, body massager and puja items are also part of the exhibition.

Brass kuthuvilakku, woodcarvings, wall hangings with silk motifs and borders, and cotton dress materials are an added attraction.

All purchases come with a 10 percent discount. The exhibition is on till May 21 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on all days.
