This store in Hatworks Boulevard, Cunningham Road, has an unusual name — PurpleOrange. "We wanted a name that was easy to connect with — the phonetics as well as the symbolisation. We want to showcase modern India, designs for the contemporary Indian," explains Raghav Bagaria, Chief Executive Officer and the man behind the store.

This cosy boutique offers traditional Indian designs with a "modern twist or even takes designs inspired by other countries and gives it the Indian twist. There has to be something Indian about our products. Be it the material, colours, theme or the technique used," adds Raghav.

This store sells silk home furnishings. So when you walk into this cosy place, your eyes are treated to brightly coloured cushions, throws and drapes in fine silk, each individually different from the other. One finds a lot of intricate embroidery and sequinned work on most of the designs, both in the traditional and contemporary collections.

Varied choices

PurpleOrange recently launched and showcased its latest collections, which will be on display for two months, after which they will be replaced by new ones. Some of the collections are changed every month to provide its customers with new varieties and also "not to become stagnant in being creative".

There is one range that has influences from the Mughal era. Here you'll find cushions with rich embroidered necklines like that of the classic angarkha. Then there is the O'Saga Collection inspired by the land of the rising sun, Japan. Here one gets to see a lot of work in circular motifs.

"The spirit of our creations is enriched with a melee of cultural exchanges. We work with master craftsmen to create pieces that blend traditional couture craftsmanship with today's cutting edge technologies," adds Raghav, who has worked with many restaurants abroad after graduating from a restaurant school. Having been a part of the hospitality industry gives Raghav that added edge, as he is able to understand the "melding of design and service offerings in prestigious hotels, Michelin restaurants and homes across the globe". "We believe that home furnishing is an extension of the soul and we strive to create not just drapery but works of art," he adds.

There is another interesting range "inspired by the transport system". The designs in this section come in the shapes of a lorry, auto and bicycle. In fact, the cushions are designed in such a way that the tyres are also a part of the cushion. That's not all; these cushions also come with vehicle registration numbers!

These cute accessories come with such craftsmanship they have to be dry washed. Along with the silk one can also find some designs in cottons, which can be bought as a single piece or as a mix 'n' match. The choice is yours.

In case you're looking for something more exclusive, then you can talk to the designing team at PurpleOrange, which is open to doing up your entire home, office or even hotel. "We want to showcase our design through every collection, and to do this, five product categories are sufficient," says Raghav. "Designing homes is definitely challenging. Even a tailor-made dress need not suit or fit a person perfectly, the endeavour is to dress up the home in the most `fitting' way," he beams.

PurpleOrange, open between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m., can be contacted on 57672643. Check out www.purpleorange.net
