May festivities on a roll

The May Queen pageant at the Secunderabad Club had winners all

ALL SMILES Contestants at the May Queen and May Prince pageant

Putting aside hot, sultry days, the month of May has many things to look forward to. Take the May Queen pageant at the Secunderabad Club for instance. Though the event has evolved over the years, the ball is a tradition that is woven into the club's history. No summer seems complete unless the May Queen Ball is held. This year though, the administration and the organisers went a step further, made a few changes and held a combined May Queen and May Prince event. The boys didn't have to tell us that they were upbeat and excited about being a part of the event — their enthusiasm said it all!

The final round on May 13 saw the 25 contestants being narrowed down to 19. Former Mrs. India Shilpa Reddy, Pullela Gopichand, Santha John, Anant Kishen Rao and Vani Subhash were the judges on this day.

Imran Khan, choreographed the show while event manager Mehernawaz ensured that were no hiccups. The two-week run up to the final event inlcuded workshops in Speech and Personality development and Image building. Anil of Linarp was also roped in to do a pre-event photo shoot. Mehernawaz says, "The contestants learned a lot and hats off to those who had the guts to participate."

Winning club

The May Queen title for the year went to Capt. Puneet Kalyan, while the May Prince title went to Krish Patnaik. The first and second runners up amongst the girls were Smitha and Neetika, while Akshay and Aditya clinched the titles amongst the boys. Sub-titles like Miss Beautiful Hair, Miss Beautiful Skin, Miss Scooty Pep, Mr. Debonair and Mr. Congeniality ensured that almost all finalists went home happy. The evening culminated with the winners posing for pictures and taking the mandatory walk down the ramp while a colourful fireworks display lit up the night sky. But this doesn't mark the end of the May festivities. This weekend, the RSI will host their May Queen Ball— an event that is known to attract the most well-groomed youngsters from the defence services.
