I have been having dandruff for the last six months. Please suggest which shampoo, oil and henna I should use. Second, which sunscreen should I use in summer? Also, suggest a remedy to improve skin colour.Gurupriti

Wash your hair three or four times a week, using a mild herbal shampoo. It is not possible to mention brand names. Half an hour before shampooing, apply one tablespoon of vinegar on the scalp, massaging it lightly. Once a week, heat pure coconut oil or til oil and apply it on the scalp at night. Apply henna once a week. The henna should be dull green in colour. Add four teaspoons each of lemon juice and coffee, two raw eggs, one teaspoon of methi seed powder and enough curd to the henna powder, mixing it into a thick paste. Apply it on the hair and wash it off after an hour. If you do not wish to use egg, add more curd. Apply a sunscreen lotion with SPF 15 to 20. To lighten skin colour, mix one teaspoon of honey with two teaspoons of lemon juice and apply it daily, washing it off after 20 minutes.

I have oily skin and it looks dull. My skin type is oily and looks dull. I also have some spots on my face. What should I do? Please tell me how to have a home facial. Parul

You can use a medicated soap or a face wash for oily skin. Mix rice powder with curd or rose water and apply it on the face. Rub gently with small circular movements. If the spots are due to pimples, you can use the scrub on them. If they are pimple-like eruptions, avoid using the scrub on them. Wash it off with water. For a home facial, after cleansing, tone the skin with chilled rose water. Soak cotton wool in the rose water and give the face a cold compress. Then apply a mask by mixing oatmeal with one teaspoon each of honey, curd and egg white. Wash it off after 20 minutes.

I have a lot of unwanted facial hair. Which is the safest and best method to remove it? Is laser treatment safe or can I use hair- removing creams, which are easily available in the market? Swetha

You can get rid of facial hair by threading or waxing done at a good beauty salon. These are temporary methods, but waxing is said to discourage hair growth over a period of time. It is better not to use hair-removing creams on the face. Laser treatment is safe and is said to be a permanent remedy, but go to a reputed laser clinic. Also find out the costs involved, the number of sessions required and side effects, if any. Check out whether there are chances of re-growth. You can also ask the clinic what are the chances of regrowth.

I am a 25-year-old male. My hair is dull, rough and lifeless. I have lots of grey hair and also suffer from hair loss. I wash my hair thrice a week, but a lot of flakes are present. I want to try different hairstyles, but the hairdresser says it is not possible. I read that a combination of pure Vitamin E oil, Jojoba oil, Rosemary Oil and Peppermint Oil applied at bedtime stimulates growth. Is this true? Hariharen

If you have flakes, it must be dandruff. Wash your hair daily, but use less quantity of a mild herbal shampoo. Apply one tablespoon of vinegar on the scalp half an hour before shampooing your hair. It should be massaged lightly into the scalp. Have henna treatment once a week. Adding amla will help check greying. However, henna leaves a reddish brown colour on white hair. If you would like to try it, you can Soak a handful of dry amla in about two to three cups water overnight. Next morning, strain the water, but do not throw it away. Grind the amla and add it to the henna powder, along with four teaspoons each of lemon juice and coffee, 2 raw eggs and enough amla water, so that it becomes a thick paste. Apply it to cover the entire head. Keep it on for two hours and wash it off. This will solve the dandruff problem and add life to the hair. You can also apply the oils you mentioned. However, Rosemary Oil and Peppermint Oil are essential oils. Therefore, you must mix them in the appropriate ratio with the other oils. Rosemary helps treat dandruff, while Vitamin E and Jojoba are nourishing.

I am 25 and have combination skin with pigmentation around the mouth and on the sides of the forehead. I also get pimples now and then. I recently had an oxygen facial following which the skin is smooth. What should I do to have firm skin and good complexion?Roseanne

You can use a facial scrub on the dark areas daily. Use rose water to tone the skin. Soak cotton wool in rosewater and wipe the face with it. Mix one part of honey with two parts of lemon juice and apply it on the dark areas daily, washing it off after 20 minutes. Twice a week, mix oatmeal with curd, honey and egg white, and apply it on the entire face, washing it off after 20 or 30 minutes. If the Oxygen Facial suited you, you can have it done twice a month.

I am 35. I had fair complexion and normal skin. Now my office is located near the beach and my skin is getting drier and tanned rapidly. This, I presume, may be due to the salty breeze. Please advise some home remedies. V.S. Agila

The sun's radiation is much stronger near water bodies, as it gets reflected. That is why the skin gets more tanned. You should apply a sunscreen lotion with SPF 20 before going out in the sun.

Apply it about 15 minutes before going out. You should carry your sunscreen and re-apply it if you go out from the office. Use a mild, glycerine soap.

Mix honey with lemon juice and egg yolk making it into a paste that does not drip and apply it on the face daily, washing it off after 20 minutes. At night, after washing, apply a nourishing cream and massage it on the skin for two to three minutes. Wipe it off with moist cotton wool.
