"Be your own boss"

It is exciting to be an entrepreneur, says Srikanth Prakash, a student

Srikanth Prakash

I prefer to be my own boss. It is exhilarating to have control over your time and space, especially to be independent. Yet I don't see many people of my age (in their twenties) eager to start their own venture. Many are afraid of taking risks. Is our education system to be blamed, one wonders, as the focus seems to be on exams and campus recruitments. Managerial skills are not honed. When we are young we can afford to take risks. We are not tied down by commitment.

Setting up a big company such as Infosys or Wipro is not impossible. We may fail, but that's not the end of the road. We should not be bogged down by the imagined enormity of the task. I have met a few who dream of starting a business, but are afraid of taking that first step. They join a firm and take cover under the excuse of "gaining experience". But how many years will it take for anyone to get sufficient experience?

Being your own master does not mean having no rules. It does not mean sauntering into your office at any hour. I'll be punctual. I will have a code of conduct, the one defined by me. My passion will be my motivation and so there will be no room for indiscipline or slackness.

SOUND OFF! is a weekly space for you to rant, applaud or talk about anything on your mind. Write to metro@thehindu.co.in telling us a little about yourself (with address and phone number), and you may get a chance to sound off!
