The art of Kalamkari has never had it so good. Today, the once flourishing temple art of Srikalahasti finds expression in many lifestyle products, and in recent times, even on a book jacket.
Mastercraftsman and National Award winner K. Subramanyam pursues this art with commitment. Some of his paintings, which were recently exhibited at the National Folklore Support Centre, were proof of this.
The pieces embraced two schools the Kalamkari school and the Kalambari school of Masulipatnam, which combined Islam inspired images of flower and vine as well as the Tree of Life.
The themes were inspired by Hindu mythology and the images, stylised. Among the paintings, done using natural dyes, was a compelling Ramayana panel in yellow and red. The images of Ganesha, Saraswati and Lakshmi had a touch of individuality. A turmeric yellow Ganesha wall hanging had delicately etched details. Krishna the Cowherd was yet another fine piece.
A series of Tree of Life paintings was outstanding in treatment, colour and concept. The exhibition also featured painted Kalamkari dupattas, saris and tops. K. Subramanyam can be contacted at 16/61, Panagal, Srikalahasti, Chittoor District, Andhra Pradesh, ph; 08578-61693.
