The pass word

Parents and teachers will have to display caution and sensitivity as result-time looms closer

YOUNG ADULTS In need of help

Soon, the class X and XII results will be declared. Students, parents, teachers and other academicians await them with bated breath.

Ever since the introduction of the new syllabus, there has been a lot of disquiet amongst state board students. To bring the syllabus at par with CBSE and ICSE, efforts were made to "upgrade" the syllabus and half way through, portions were reduced to ease the burden on students. Thetough Physics paper has further disturbed the students and the late announcement of TNPCEE- 2006 has added to their stress.

A lot of students may be disappointed with the results and may contemplate running away from home or worse. Principals, Head masters, teachers and parents in particular should be physically present to counsel failed students. They need undivided attention and support.

Parents should

Be positive and encouraging in your words.

Tell your children not to worry.

Make sure at least one of you accompanies the child to school.

Assure them that you will continue to love and support them even if they perform badly.

Schools should

Nominate a teacher to identify failed candidates and bring them to the Principal.

Hire a trained counsellor (at least for that day) who can talk to those students. In absence of a cousellor, a senior teacher with whom the students have interacted over the years may be deputed for the task. Insist on parents meeting the principal/head.

If parents are absent, depute someone to escort the student home.

Students should

Take the results in their stride

Discuss any issues or problems with teachers and parents.

Never lose hope in life.

The need of the hour is the presence of teachers and parents. Teachers must encourage the students and talk to parents. Do not ever reprimand your child in front of others.

Keep an eye on the students till they have overcome the shock. Students should be told that failure is not the end but a new awakening.
