Flood of woes

The rains are here and so are all the accompanying woes — flooded roads, traffic jams, blackouts... What's worse, it's all completely unpredictable. One walks out into bright sunshine in the morning and ends up wading through knee-deep water in the evenings. And be warned, it's just the beginning of your misery. Who can forget last year's rains that simply refused to stop and flooded homes, basements, and offices? Last year the monsoon was so severe that with it came death and disease. Is Bangalore better prepared this year? Or should we just play it safe and carry lifejackets and boats to stay afloat when the infrastructure succumbs to the rain god's fury?

Shilpa Sebastian R. asks Bangaloreans how they are geared for this year's rains.

Bangalore is bad when it rains. You can't walk on the roads as there is so much water splashing all around you. In this city one assocaites everything bad with the rains. I always carry a jacket to safeguard myself.

Rain is the best way to beat the heat. But infrastructurewise this metropolitan city is good but the outskirts are bad. People there are not prepared for the rains. The roads there too get worse after every rain.

We should not blame the government for that lack infrastructure. We, as individuals, should do something to improve the situation. That way we'll achieve more as everyone will be responsible for his/her actions.

We're so used to the rains. But if people take individual responsibly to improve the surroundings then rains can be pleasant too. That way at least there will be some improvement.

Bangalore is just not prepared for the rains. The infrastructure is pathetic too. Nothing much has been done since the last rains. We still have bad roads which are flooded every time it rains.

Komal

Bangalore is not prepared for the rains at all. The situation here is so bad. Neither the government nor the police is prepared for the eventualities. The infrastructure is pathetic.

Ananth Rao

Kulkarni, Engineer

The roads get clogged and flooded. There's so much garbage that it can be called a garbage city and not garden city. Rains are good but if we're unprepared with the sanitation it can be harmful.

People in the city are better off than those in the outskirts. They are very unprepared for the rains, with lakes overflowing. To protect myself I always carry a jacket in my bag.

Sowmya

There's nothing new. Everytime it rains we're faced with the same bad situation. It's such a repetitive pattern year after year. A life jacket will definitely fit into my bag, but the boat, hmmm, I'm not too sure...
