Control urinary incontinence

Intake of caffeine and alcohol increases incontinence

What can be more embarrassing for a woman than to rush to the toilet to urinate and have a few drops escape in the process, as she is unable to control? Well, this condition is called urinary incontinence and can occur both in men and women due to various reasons.

In some women, during sudden physical movements like coughing, sneezing and laughing there is a leakage of urine and it is called stress incontinence.

Similarly, there may be a sudden urge to pass urine when working in water or seeing running water. This is called as urge incontinence.

Forms and causes

In some conditions like the Alzheimer's disease, where the thought process is not always under control, there is an involuntary passage of urine and is called functional incontinence.

In men, due to certain conditions like prostate gland hypertrophy and stricture of the urethra there is incomplete discharge of urine and some amount always remains in the bladder. This causes an urge that is not only more frequent, but also urgent and is called as overflow incontinence.

In some conditions like urinary tract infections there are temporary symptoms called transient incontinence.

The ability of the pelvic floor muscles may be disturbed during pregnancy, with the unborn baby exerting pressure over the internal organs. This can cause incontinence, but it is only temporary.

During difficult delivery, where episiotomy is required, incontinence could occur for a few days or weeks.

Oestrogen helps in keeping the bladder and urethra plump and healthy. It maintains good contraction and relaxation of muscles.

But in menopause, there is a lack of this hormone due to which the incidence of the problem is high.

Preventive methods

Pelvic floor exercises will help improve the condition as it helps retain urine better. It is also better to make frequent visits to the toilet so that dribbling can be prevented.

Reduce the intake of caffeine and alcohol, as it tends to increase incontinence.

Homoeopathic medicines help in reducing many types of leakage as well. These drugs improve the strength of the pelvic floor muscles and the sphincter and also calm down the overactive bladder muscles.

If there is escape of urine while laughing, coughing or blowing the nose, Pulsatilla and Causticum are helpful. Gelsemium is a good remedy, if the sphincter is lax and the muscles do not respond causing leakage. Cantharis, Clematis and Sepia are found to be useful when the urge to urinate is urgent.
