It will be a special Sunday

Doordarshan's Mangalore Chandana Utsav is all set to offer a bouquet of cultural programmes in the city

Come Sunday and the magnificent Dr. T.M.A. Pai International Convention Centre on Mahatma Gandhi Road in Mangalore will reverberate with the sound of dance and music.

Providing a platform for the locals to display their inherent talent will be India's leading public service broadcaster, Doordarshan, which is organising the Mangalore Chandana Utsav on that day.

The brainchild of Mahesh Joshi, Director of Doordarshan Kendra, Bangalore, Chandana Utsav is aimed at bringing Chandana, the regional channel of Doordarshan to its viewers. It has been a focussed endeavour of Doordarshan to take the channel to the doors of every citizen in the state and outside through a qualitative spread of infotainment.

This is the third in the series of programmes that Doordarshan Kendra, Bangalore intends to organise. The first programme was held in Dharwad and the second at Mysore.

DD is now organising the third edition in this coastal city in association with Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal; Sandesha Foundation for Arts and Culture, Mangalore; and All India Radio, Mangalore.

Mr. Joshi says the main objective of organising such an Utsav is to take Doordarshan closer to the people. "Our objective is to change Doordarshan into `Sameep Darshan' for the common audience and we intend to feel the pulse of our viewers through such an exercise."

The three-hour cultural bonanza, featuring a bouquet of cultural programmes by both leading and local artistes, will be telecast live on Chandana and Karnataka regional service (Doordarshan 1) from 5 p.m. onwards.

"We have selected 10 local teams who will perform on that day. The U.S.-based Rukmini Vijaykumar will perform Bharathanatya and Madan Mallu and troupe will sing songs from films featuring Rajkumar in a tribute to the departed thespian, said Mr. Joshi. Admission to the programme is free. D. Veerendra Heggade, Dharmadhikari of Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala, will preside over the function. M.V. Kamath, Chairman, Prasar Bharati, H.S. Ballal, Vice-Chancellor, MAHE, and Aloysius Paul D'Souza, Bishop of Mangalore will be the guests of honour on the occasion.
