SANCTUARY SPOTLIGHT

Nandini Wildlife Sanctuary

Named after the nearby Nandini village, this sanctuary is well known for its rich bird life and mammals. Many species of pheasants abound in this scenic sanctuary, established in 1990.

The sanctuary, situated 843 metres above sea level, is home to a wealth of wildlife including 65 species of birds, of which the Indian pea fowl and Kalij pheasant are star attractions.

During the season, you can sight animals such as goral, Indian fox, barking deer, two species of civet cats, jungle cat, hare, common leopard, rhesus monkey, mongoose, five-striped squirrel and porcupine. Babblers, great jungle fowl, barbets, bee-eaters, and bulbul are the prominent members of the avian kingdom here.

The best season for bird watching is between March and May. Animal lovers can visit between August and September. It can get quite hot during summer, with temperatures crossing 40 degrees Celsius.
