Hand-crafted exhibits

Two exhibitions in the city bring you a variety of wares

EXQUISITE HANDCRAFTS All under one roof

If you want to witness what wonders the human hand can do, visit President Hall on Avinashi Road. Here, the All India Handloom and Handicrafts has put up an exhibition-cum-sale.

Every article on display has been hand crafted. And you can get something for as little as Rs.10.

From Hyderabad comes a collection of jewellery. Bangles and chains made out of a gram of gold, necklaces worth Rs. 700, pooja items and bracelets made of camel bone are some of the wares available.

There are jute accessories available, too. If you have a fancy for precious stones, there are emeralds, pearls, jade, rubies, etc.

For your home there are wall hangings made of silk thread, deco-paintings, terracotta lamps and decorative pen stands and coasters that can enhance the appearance of your living room.

Hand-painted images on palm leaves from Orissa and pictures with wooden inlay and even precious stones are available.

The screwpine bags and boxes are the works of the Kottapuram Integrated Development Society. There are a variety of wooden handicrafts.

Boxes, coasters, pen stands, candle stands, fruit bowls, ashtrays and other decorative items are available in plenty. Metal works from Aligarh are priced between Rs. 150 and Rs. 10,000.

Imported leather belts and purses from Italy also find a place here.

Embroidered churidhars, jeans, kurtas, choli, zari-worked saris from Jaipur, Lucknow, Gujarat and Haryana grab the attention of visitors. Cushion covers, carpets and pillow cases are also a part of it.

These are available starting from Rs. 150. "Brass and hand-carved statues of Ganesha in various sizes are on display.

A 5-feet Ganesha made of rose wood and weighing about 350 kg and priced at Rs. 6,52,100 is noteworthy.

It took almost six months to complete this hand-made statue", says K. Mani, organiser of the exhibition.

Dining tables, chairs and sofa sets are brilliantly crafted. Most of them are made of Assam teak and are available up to Rs. 1,15,000.

A beautifully decorated swing made of aluminium and German silver costs Rs. 1,10,000.

This exhibition is open to the public from 9.30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on all days, till June 18.

At Poompuhar

Clothes, decorative items, jewellery - they are all there at the Poompuhar exhibition near Town Hall in the city. The collection of ghagra cholis, saris, kurtas, salwar-kameez and tops come in a range of colours and variety. There are rayon skirts from Rajasthan and skirts and bedspreads from Jaipur. Embroidered churidhar material is also available. The Madurai Chungidi saris are an attractive buy and range up to Rs. 1,440. Punjabi phulkari work is available too.

The exhibits also include Hyderabad pearls, precious stones and bangles made of one gram gold.

The Chennapatinam toys from Mysore nod their heads in a friendly fashion, while deco-paintings, wooden letter stands, coasters and jewel boxes all stand in a line.

Every purchase comes with a 10 per cent discount. This exhibition is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. till June 16.
