Desi games at Eka

In an age when everyone's making a beeline for Ninja video gaming consoles and mobile games and the like, it may be worth the while to check out some Indian chowkabara and shataranj.

Eka, the ethnic Indian lifestyle store, has on display two intriguing collections of games — one crafted in wood, the other crafted with embroidered fabric.

The wooden game series comprises of games with a global appeal — such as chess, backgammon, dominoes, and naughts and crosses. These have been handcrafted from rosewood, sheesham wood and boxwood. The hand-carved chess pieces are an excellent example of fine craftsmanship.

The embroidered game series comprises of traditional Indian games such as chopad, nav-kakri, vagh aur bakri and also ethnic renditions of the more modern checkers and snakes and ladders.

These games have been crafted from block printed cotton fabric and embellished with traditional Gujarati embroidery. Also look out for the kaleidoscopes and taleidoscopes.

Most of these products are custom designed and contract manufactured, or handpicked from across India directly from artisans, craftsmen and manufacturers. The exhibition is on till June 18.

Eka is at No. 19 Gangadhar Chetty Road, opposite RBANMS grounds (near the Ulsoor Lake). Timings: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. all days of the week. Call 25544371 and 25540876.
