SIMPLY SWISS The European Desserts Festival brings hand- made chocolates, lemon bon-bons and more
To attempt to introduce European flavours to Hyderabad is one thing, but to manage to bring in authentic flavours is quite another, something Swiss Castle Bakers managed to do quite well. At their European Desserts Festival inaugurated by Belgian Chef Omar, the bakery has introduced almost 50 varieties of cakes and desserts. Swiss Castle is owned by three brothers Anand, Arvind and Ashwin who are promoting the concept of vegetarian cakes and bakes.
The festival is on at all three of their branches in Abids, Ameerpet and Narayanguda, but it's the one in Abids that has the widest range on display. The range changes everyday and the desserts include pies, cakes, mousses and mousse cakes. Most of the ingredients used are new and these desserts will incorporate Puratos fresh cream, Belgian chocolate, fresh cream and cooking chocolate from fine brands like Barry Callibu from France and Krish Unifine of Belgium.
The cream used is whipped to a soft fluffy consistency and is extremely light in taste, not too sweet and doesn't leave a greasy after taste either. Try the mango cake- a layered cake with fresh mango pieces or the black currant mousse. An intense black currant dessert is difficult to find in the city and these guys get it right. The White Cloud- a cake coated with whipped cream and white chocolate has a layered strawberry filling. Going by the quality of white chocolate you often find in India, the combination seemed very unappealing, but one bite and you'll ask for more. The white milk chocolate was just the way it should be - neither too sweet or milky. The peach cake another layered fruit cake with the right amount of flavour and a fruit glaze on top was good. While you're there, try their hand made chocolates with peanut, blueberry and lemon filling. The lemon bon-bons had a lemon-curd type filling which was very interesting to taste. Other notable items of the festival were the Chocolate Cake, the Apricot Mousse and Pistachio Cake. But there is one little drawback. Everything looks good, but if you want to know what you're eating or what's on display, chances are that your questions will draw a blank stare from the bakery staff. It seems like they themselves are quite confused about their new fancy desserts.
Though the festival is to end soon, the bakery will continue to churn out these goodies because as Anand says, "If our customers come in and ask for these cakes and desserts, we cannot turn them away." The cakes are unlike what most bakeries attempt to pass off as European goodies and Swiss Castle does a better job than most star bakeries.
