Multicultural music
It will be an evening of multicultural music on June 16, 7 p.m. at the Alliance Francaise of Madras auditorium (24, College Road, Nungambakkam). Jugalbandi, a programme of world music, featuring traditional Indian and African songs will be presented by a group of musicians hailing form Marseilles. The group comprises Sayon Bamba Camara, a singer from Guinea, Rico on the horn, bass guitarist Laurent Pernice, Hamid Gribi on the drums, Richard Bernet on the sarod and Nabankur Bhattacharya on the tabla. They will render traditional Indian and African songs and treat Chennai-ites to some interesting fusion notes.
On June 17, 7 p.m., the Alliance Francaise presents Cobra, also at its auditorium. The programme is all about musical improvisation and the performers include Malavika (prompts, noisemakers); Rakesh Khanna (drums, prompts); Lavanya (saxophone); S. P. Arulanandam (thavil); Syam Chand (electric guitar); Raj Royan (electric bass guitar); Ripan Sarkar (harmonium, vocals); Hari (mridangam); and Venkat (ghatam).
Cobra is well-known New York composer John Zorn's "game pieces" (sets of improvisation rules for groups of musicians). The rules allow the players to collaboratively decide the sound and structure of a piece as it is being performed, interacting through a prompter. Written in 1984, Cobra has been performed by many groups in cities around the world. At one time, the Knitting Factory in New York had a monthly Cobra night; one night would feature traditional Mexican musicians, while another would feature only electric guitarists.
