Aloe for all reasons

Aloe Vera has become a vital ingredient of many Indian products. But to what extent do we benefit from it?

BENEFICIAL SHRUB Aloe vera offers beauty and health

The magic plant, as many call it, has at last found its way to many Indian products. Not many of us would have given a second look at the non-fussy aloe plant that grew in our gardens a few years ago.

It was only when cosmetic companies worldwide started harping on the benefits of aloe vera, the plant got its due recognition.

Today, you needn't visit upscale supermarkets or duty free shops to lay your hands on aloe products.

Scan the shelves of any store and you can pick up hair serums, petroleum jelly, face creams, gels, shampoos and conditioners and even aloe vera health drinks!

And all of them come at affordable prices.

The next time you decide to have a dekko at handicraft and industrial exhibitions, look out for aloe vera products. Aloe gels and shampoos prepared by DWCRA groups are available for a steal.

But what's it that sets aloe products apart? And are they really beneficial?

Aloe Vera is said to heal and refresh your skin while accelerating healing process of mild burns.

Advantage aloe

Consumption of aloe drinks under guidance is said to help those with diabetes, arthritis and generally boost the immune system.

The thumb rule before you purchase a product is to take a closer look at the ingredients. Unlike imported products that tell you the percentage of each ingredient, most Indian labels do not disclose the amount of each constituent.

If the percentage of components is listed, choose the product that has a higher amount of aloe vera, say between 70 to per cent.

Products that have just two or three per cent aloe vera are not of much help.

Also, check whether the product bears a seal of certification.

Well-known products are certified by the International Aloe Science Council or any recognised body.
