SOME RELIEF The Active wheelchair promises to make life a lot better
Finally there is some relief around for people with locomotor disabilities. A lightweight, advanced and `active' wheelchair called India Wheelchair has been developed at Indian Spinal Injuries Centre, New Delhi that promises to be more viable for Indian conditions. The new wheelchair with easy manoeuvrability has been designed by Arun Sondhi, a rehab trainee from Sweden, with the support of rehabilitation professionals at the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre. The product is being manufactured and marketed by Multivac group of companies at Gurgaon. It has already manufactured 25 wheelchairs for the patients at ISIC and plans to go for mass production soon.
According to H.S. Chabbra, chief of Spine Service, Indian spinal Injuries Centre, New Delhi, "Lack of suitable wheelchair prevents many people with locomotor disabilities in India from leading an active and productive lifestyle. India Wheelchair, because of its light weight and easy manoeuvrability allows patients to perform wheelchair skills that are difficult to do with other wheelchairs available in the market". Indian Spinal Injuries Centre is the national leader in spinal cord injuries and is the most advanced super speciality hospital-cum-rehab centre in South Asia.
Extensive trials have been done before the manufacture and marketing of the wheelchair. Priced at Rs.6600 as against the expensive imported wheelchairs costing as much as Rs.50000, India
Wheelchair is available in three sizes - small, medium and large. It has detachable wheels and armrests, making it compact and portable. It has a strong metal frame, washable seat and back rest and sway away footrest. Wheelies can be easily performed on this wheelchair for better movement.
