Finally there is some relief around for people with locomotor disabilities. A lightweight, advanced and `active' wheelchair called India Wheelchair has been developed at Indian Spinal Injuries Centre, New Delhi that promises to be more viable for Indian conditions. The new wheelchair with easy manoeuvrability has been designed by Arun Sondhi, a rehab trainee from Sweden, with the support of rehabilitation professionals at the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre. Extensive trials have been done before the manufacture and marketing of the wheelchair. Priced at Rs.6600 as against the expensive imported wheelchairs costing as much as Rs.50000, India
Wheelchair is available in three sizes - small, medium and large. It has detachable wheels and armrests, making it compact and portable. It has a strong metal frame, washable seat and back rest and sway away footrest. Wheelies can be easily performed on this wheelchair for better movement.
