Toasting the host

Exploiting the absence of a German restaurant in Delhi, The Ambassador Hotel launches a German food festival.

It is time to partake of the host's cuisine. With Germany hosting the World Cup, The Ambassador Hotel has introduced a-month-long extravaganza of German food at Yellow Brick Road. The Central Marketing Organization of German Agriculture Industries (CMA) presents `Taste of Germany', along with Taj Mahal and Lufthansa.

The CMA's main aim is to promote and market German agricultural products abroad and at home. Sixteen German companies are displaying their products for the festival. Five German specialist Chefs have been flown down especially. The German baker Wolfgang Altenburger vacated the kitchen to mingle with guests on the opening night. He left his bakery in South Germany to showcase German baking. Guests were treated to a wide array of German breads, salads, meats and sweets. To the Indian eye the absence of yellow and red was striking. But various dishes in shades of white, cream and green were satisfying.

The menu included typical German fare of pickles and Suuerkraut, a pungent dish made from finely shredded cabbage and soaked in salt. Potato and meats being the staple food, there were plenty to choose from. There were a variety of cold meats and sausages like Frankfurters, Regensburgers and Bratwurst. The deserts included traditional Black Forest Cake, Apple Strudel and Cheesecake.

A complete meal, without alcohol, will cost around Rs.850 per head.
