Screening of Janaki Vishwanathan's `Dikshidargal' on June 21
|
The National Folklore Support Centre is screening a documentary film titled "Dikshidargal" by Janaki Vishwanathan, media personality and film maker. The event will take place on June 21, 5.30 p.m. at Indian School of Folklore, NFSC, No. 505, 5th Floor, Kaveri Complex, 96, Mahatma Gandhi Road, Nungambakkam.
The story is about the dikshitars, a priestly class who administer and maintain the famous Siva Nataraja temple at Chidambaram. Mythology traces the origin of this class to around 3,000 Siva devotees who are believed to have arrived at the cosmological centre of the Universe nearly 4,000 years ago.
The film documents the changing lifestyle of 324 families of those who are the original descendants of the first of the initial 3,000 families. As a very close knit community, they present themselves as ready subjects of a candid ethnography by Janaki. The film is in English. For more information, call 28229192 or 42138410.
