Rajiv Gandhi National Park, Nagarhole
A river meanders through the Rajiv Gandhi National Park and gives it its name, Nagarhole, `snake river' in Kannada. Falling within the Kodagu and Mysore districts and with 643.39 sq km at its disposal, the park has an abundance of wildlife. The Asiatic elephant makes its home here as do the sambar, barking deer, sloth bear, black-naped hare, langur, wild boar, slender loris, porcupine, four-horned antelope and a lot more. For bird lovers, there are egrets, ducks, kites, storks, herons, eagles, falcons, partridges, peafowl, sandpipers, woodpeckers, wagtails, warblers, babblers and owls. The reptiles in the park include the Russell's viper, the common krait, the Indian python, the marsh crocodile, the rat snake, the star tortoise, chameleons and the common Indian monitor lizard.
Mainly deciduous forests cover the park, and teak and rosewood trees abound. The park is 234 km from Bangalore and 94 km from Mysore.
Best time to visit: All through winter and before the monsoons set in. But the hot season is conducive to spot animals, including the tiger, as they gather at watering holes.
Both private and state-owned accommodation is available at Nagarhole.
A government cottage with three rooms, each with double occupancy, is available at Rs. 750 per room. Food is extra. The Forest Department vehicle organises safaris at Rs. 25 per head.
