Are we ready for the monsoon?

Is the city geared up?

There were times when people awaited the arrival of the South West monsoons. But these days who cares? It's only the farmers who await the rains. The roads in the city are dug up for some reason or the other. The government is least bothered to solve the intrinsic needs like filling up the pits and levelling the ground. So even a slight drizzle prior to the monsoons caused great inconvenience. Imagine the situation when the monsoon is in full swing! Also, the water stagnation can be a breeding ground for mosquitoes. We will surely find water flowing into houses that are located in low-lying areas and people on the streets will have to wade through knee-deep water. Preeti Shravan,

Potholes and water logging

After the scorching heat, it's time for the showers. Though people are vigilant and ready with their armours against the rains, the municipal authorities are ignoring basic amenities. As a result, the condition of the city ready is deteriorating and we see potholes everywhere. Added to this, there are regular traffic snarls and water logging.

Tall claims

We are definitely not ready for monsoons, despite the tall claims made by officials. In major areas of the city, chocked drainages have not been cleared. There is absolutely no coordination amongst the various departments in the MCH. Exposed trenches will be watery graves for many. Schools have already re-opened. Last year, open manholes claimed many lives, showing the sheer negligence of sewerage department. A.P. Transco also refrained from checking exposed wires and earthing for electric poles. In many areas builders have encroached half of the roads by dumping materials such as steel, metal and gravel. All these will add to the existing woes and create havoc.
