Plant attractive trees
This is with reference to the Green Notes column (May 30). The Corporation of Chennai should initiate action to plant saplings that will grow to be attractive trees with spreading crowns and showy flowers on roadsides as well as parks in the city. The need of the hour is to re-establish and revamp the urban forestry wing, which came to an abrupt end soon after its formation in 2003.
For achieving its target of a green city, the Government should encourage people's participation besides involving school/college students for watering and nurturing the saplings planted in their areas. This will go a long way in cleaning and greening Chennai.
Apart from the two species (Cassia javanica and Cassia roxburghii), the city roads may be adorned with Lagerstroenia flos regina, Cassia fistula (Indian labernum), Millingtonia, Plumeria album, Spathodia companulata, Parkia biglandulosa, Bauhinia purpura and Terminalia catappa.
