Monsoon melodies
`RAINING' MELODIES Raj Kapoor and Nargis in that immortal song sequence from Shree 420
In Indian mainstream cinema (are we being politically correct or what?) the monsoon is the right trigger for the violins, soaked saris and lilting melody. Rushing in where angels fear to tread, here are some watershed, waterlogged moments on celluloid.
Pyaar hua ikrar hua: Raj Kapoor and Nargis share an umbrella and walk into a black-and-white sunset to Shankar Jaikishen's wonderful music. Incidentally, this song from Shree 420 (1955) was so popular with the Greeks, that there are four translations of the song! Ek ladki bheegi bhagi si: Kishore Kumar and the luminescent Madhubala romance the rains in Chalti Ka Naam Gadi (1958)
Roop tera mastana: In Shakti Samanta's Aradhana (1969), Bengal tigress Sharmila Tagore and the Phenomenon Rajesh Khanna set the screen ablaze with this number credited to S.D. Burman but there is son, Pancham's, influence.
Hai hai yeh majdoori: Manoj (Mr. Bharat) Kumar is the upright young man in Roti Kapda aur Makan (1974) while Zeenat Aman plays his out-for-a-fun-time girlfriend. Before she turns pious and good and realises the error of her westernised ways, she takes time out to sing in the rain to this Laxmikant Pyarelal number.
Rim jhim gire saawan: Before he turned into the angry young man with no time to sing in the rain, Amitabh Bachchan and Moushumi Chatterjee sang to R. D. Burman's tune in Basu Chatterjee's Manzil (1977).
Aaj rapat jaye: Art movie queen Smita Patil proves she is hotter than the hottest as she joins the Big B in a water-soaked cinch in Prakash Mehra's Namak Halal (1982).
Kaate nahin kathe: Sridevi realises her heart beats only for the invisible man, Mr India in the eponymous 1987 film directed by Shekhar Kapur. Sridevi sizzled and we realise that Anil Kapoor looks his sexiest best when he is invisible!
Na jaane kahan se aayee hai: This is Sridevi in another kind of rain song the fun kind. In Chaalbaaz (1989), Pankaj Parashar's reworking of Ramesh Sippy's laugh riot, Seeta aur Geeta, the boisterous Sridevi sings and dances in the rain much to Sunny Deol's amusement.
Ghanana ghanana: The ultimate millennial rain song. Aamir Khan and fellow villagers of the little village of Champaner hail the rain gods in A.R. Rahman's zesty composition for Ashutosh Gowariker's Lagaan (2002).
