A soul-stirring play
Satyam Shivam Sundaram in association with Working Title presents "Mahadevbhai", an English play based on the events and characters gleaned from the diary of Gandhiji's private secretary. The play, written and directed by Ramu Ramanathan, will be staged tonight at 7.30, at Lion's Edifice Auditorium, D. G. Vaishnav College, 833, EVR Salai, Arumbakkam. It's a solo performance by Jaimini Pathak.
"Mahadevbhai" is remainder of a healthy tradition that's being obliterated by deep hatred and prejudice. The character that occupies centre stage is Mahadev Desai, secretary to Gandhiji. The play is based on the daily diary that Mahadevbhai maintained, in which he jotted down the innumerable letters to and by Gandhiji as well as conversations, lectures and discourses. The form chosen is one of story telling interspersed with humour as one actor plays out various characters such as Gandhiji, Nehru, Mahadevbhai, Vallabhbhai Patel and Ambedkar.
The attempt is to understand the principles that Gandhiji stood for, that which are even more relevant in today's world non-violence, economic processes that favour the poorest of the poor, religious tolerance, removal of untouchability and improving the status of women.
The performance is in aid of Parvatiben Trikamji Bhatt Gujarati Sahayakari Hospital.
Tickets are available at Turakhia Opticians (R.K. Salai and Anna Nagar branches). For details, call 98409-87678 or 98410-70796.
