Thrifty tales
C.K. Meena's article on thrift, Cheap thrills (Metroplus, June 14, 2006), brings back childhood memories of replacing shoelaces, resoling shoes, and turning around collars on shirts. My first blouse was one of my mother's which had to be downsized to fit me. And what about unused pages in notebooks to be used as rough notebooks for the next year, changing the nib on fountain pens instead of buying a new one?
Yes we were certainly brought up with a lot of thrift, which is sadly looked upon with a lot of scorn these days.
In fact the umbrella repair guys used to do brisk business while walking up and down the streets at the beginning of the monsoon season. Now they are nowhere to be seen. Poor souls!!
