Styles for the season

What's in and what's out? The latest trends in hairstyling were discussed at a workshop

COOL CUTS At the Matrix fashion show PHOTO: K. PICHUMANI

Showcasing the spring summer collection from the hair products company, Matrix, Viveka Babajee and a handful of new-to-Chennai models walked the ramp in a show that was over faster than what it would take to snip a lock of hair. But for those in the business, and if you bothered to count the heads of the crammed hall at Green Park there were a good many, the day-long workshop on trends, cuts, styles, colours and highlights must have been rewarding.

Reds, purples, browns, high-lift shades, in dramatic blocks and at the tip of cool spikes, what's in and what's not was explained by Melroy Dickson, education manager, Matrix, a salon exclusive brand which was acquired by L'Oreal last year. Flattering cuts and daring colours were also presented by the team from Kanya Salon.

The company claims the brand is number one in America, and is representative of the American heritage and values. "Fun, full of energy, open and democratic," is how Philip Giles, general manager, L'Oreal Professional Products Division, describes it.

"India is a key global market, particularly where the salon industry is concerned," and for Giles, the mission for the next five years is to see India become the leader. And he comes equipped with the optimism that might see the brand and India at number one. "There's a fantastic capacity to learn, a desire to develop new skills."

Part of the Matrix business development strategy includes educating professionals in the latest trends and newest skills. Keeping with that, Chennai will get its first education studio at G. N. Chetty Road, T.Nagar.
