Chaprala wildlife sanctuary
The Chaprala Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Gadchiroli district in the Vidharba region of Maharashtra. The sanctuary is home to a variety of wild animals such as wild boar, chital, jackal, langur, peacock, jungle cat, hare, wolf, owl, sloth bear, wild dog, black buck and mongoose. But the attraction of the sanctuary is the Giant Indian Squirrel the State animal of Maharashtra that is dwindling in number. No big cats are found in the sanctuary anymore.
Area: 139.44 sq km
A majority of the sanctuary is reserved forest (118.33 sq km). Its north eastern and southern boundaries lie adjacent to the Markhanda and Pedigundam ranges of Allapalli forest and the western border is formed by the perennial Pranhita river.
Climate: It is usually hot and dry and winters are mild.
Most of the area is under thick forest and patches of grasslands are spread over the protected area.
Flora: Nearly 245 species of plants are found in the sanctuary. The sanctuary is divided into four zones and the tourism zone is visited by bird watchers.
Best time to visit: October to March, when the rivers are full.

How to get there: The nearest airport is Nagpur, 243 km via Chandrapur.
The nearest railway station is Ballarpur 70 km away.
The nearest main bus stands are Chandrapur (85 km) and Ballarpur. The road from Chadrapur to Allapalli passes right through the sanctuary. The Chaprala sanctuary can be approached from Ashti town too. The sanctuary is open to tourists during the day.
