Beauty takes a break!

It was a beauty pageant, but the contestants for the Miss Tamil Nadu title were cooling their heels backstage

BEAUTIFUL INTERLUDE? The winners at the show

The stage was a stroke of genius — an egg-like structure with provision for entry and exit set in the middle of a frame filled out by an artistic version of peacock feathers. Amaran (art director of `Chitiram Pesudadi') had created the set to resemble the most beautiful part of the peacock, because the event at the Chennai Trade Centre's Convention Hall was about beauty, actually the most beautiful woman in Tamil Nadu.

For a good part of Miss Tamil Nadu '06, organised by Serious Fun Media and Hills Modelling Studio, the contestants cooled their heels backstage, because dance troupes and a parade of film stars took up most of the five-and-a-half hours that the event lasted. When Kavitha was crowned Miss Tamil Nadu 2006 (and Anu Menon and Krisha were given the second and third positions), the event that began on June 23 had crossed over into the next day.

Enthusiastic applause marked the early part of the beauty pageant as four top heroes vied with one another — Kamal Hassan, Prakash Raj, Ajith and Vijay — to introduce the 13 models. Because the mimicry was perfect, and the mimicry artistes were out of sight, it actually appeared as if the actors were around. Nathan brothers, who were behind these voices, created a laugh riot as they made the actors mouth their famous lines. `Ajit' introduced himself as `Thala' and `Prakash Raj' kept repeating two exclamations, `Chellam!' and `Konuduven!'

This beginning was an indication of who or what would dominate the event. Between successive blinks of the eye, a film personality would have climbed on to the stage to deliver a line about the event. The evening had spent itself when the judges — director Perarasu, actor `Ice' Akash, model Leena, actor and social worker Surekha and Bangalore-based event manager Pradeep — had their turn.

The best question: "Are beauty pageants compatible with Tamil culture?" by director Perarasu.
